Security of lives and property is one of the highest priority of every government, as it create a conducive atmosphere and enabling environment for the development of the society. However, Nigeria, like other nations is confronted with serious multidimensional security challenges that undermines its development. Notable among these challenges are the problems of insurgency, banditry, farmers/herders conflicts, arms smuggling, drugs trafficking, kidnapping and other violent crimes particularly in the northern part of the country.
The persistent security challenges forced government to take all the necessary measures to prevent and control crimes and doing a lot to bring the situation under control, but the problems still persists and are taking new dimensions on daily basis. This has resulted to grievous consequences including the loss of lives and destruction of unquantifiable properties.
As a concerned citizen who has a responsibility of advising the government on issues that has to do with public affairs, I am appealing to the government to consider the adoption of community policing strategy in combating the contemporary security challenges affecting the country. The strategy will recognize and coopt members of the community in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and all other crimes that threatens the citizens of the country.
The use of community policing strategy will serve as a complementary effort as the community members are more aware of the perpetrator’s modes of operations, time of operation, their likely hideout and escape routes because they live in their midst and as such, they are quite aware of their movements. This will however, enhance intelligence gathering, sharing of information, identification and apprehension of the suspected perpetrators. It should duly acknowledged that the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), local hunters and the vigilante have significantly contributed in the fight against insurgency in the northeastern part of the country where insurgent’s activities are more prevalent.
In view of the above, I am calling on the federal government of Nigeria to strengthen and adopt community policing strategy in the fight against all security challenges. However, this could only be achieved when the necessary logistics and welfare of the agents involved in the fight are adequately provided.
I pray that the Almighty God will intervene and provide an immediate and lasting solution to these challenges.
