Jigawa state is among the beneficiaries of National Cash Transfer programme in which the weak/less privileged are given a monthly stipend as a support in an effort to reduce poverty among people particularly in rural areas across the selected local governments (i.e Kiyawa, Miga, Taura, Jahun, Guri, Gwiwa, Roni).

In a survey conducted across these local governments where I personally interacted with the beneficiaries, their responses revealed that the NCT intervention has positively impacted on their lives as it provides them with a source of capital to start up some small businesses and some of them were able to excel in the business.

Some of the businesses engaged by some beneficiaries include, buying and selling of food stuff, sewing, buying and selling of second hand furniture, ground nut oil making among others.

Another interesting issue about the beneficiaries of NCT is their ability to contribute little amount out of their allowances for community services such as repair of borehole, helping the sick and support for community services in their various communities.

However, in spite of these successes, the beneficiaries also complain about the limited number of beneficiaries which are mainly women and the amount of money given as intervention. They further request for the increase in the amount given to them and increase in the number of beneficiaries from all the local governments.

In view of the foregoing, one can boldly and confidently assess the programme as effective in reducing the hardship that result from poverty as the beneficiaries find it as a means of their livelihood.

I will finally commend the effort of the state government under the leadership of Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar and in particular the Executive Secretary Jigawa state Rehabilitation Board Alhaji Ibrahim Rabakaya Abubakar and his team for their efforts and commitment toward the success of the programme. I also hope that the identified complains will be considered and addressed accordingly.
